Ed Gein was born in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, where his father and mother, George and Augusta Gein originated from. He lived with his mother, father and younger brother. The marriage between his father and mother was nothing to boast about, they only ceased to divorce in order to keep the family together. Later on his mother decided to move herself and the boys to the small down of Plainfield to shelter them from the outside world. All Gein’s life, he was very close to his mother. From a very young age every day, she would make him and his brother read the bible daily. She also taught him and made him believe that all women were evil and sinful creatures who were not to be trusted. Ed always tried to please his mother but rarely achieved this goal due to her lack of faith in her sons, whom she assumed would turn out to be like her husband. Taking all of this into consideration, Ed Gein was raised in an unhealthy environment which had immense impact on the rest of his life.
Shortly after Henry Gein, Ed’s brother, started to reject their mother’s views and way of life, he was killed in a fire. Henry had been concerned for Ed’s life and had spoken to him about these concerns. Ed was the last person to see his brother alive and when Henry Gein was found he had suffered head injuries prior to death.
Ed Gein lost his mother on May 29th 1945, this was very devastating for him he considered her his one and only friend and true love. He stayed living in the house on the farm and boarded up all the rooms used by his mother, preserving them as some sort of shrines in dedication to her.
